I would suggest reading Twitch's Privacy policy. For me, I'd rather not have a fourth damn authentication app installed on my phone, and I'd rather prefer to minimize my attack surface by not having an account with a service I don't use, so now I'm waiting thirty days for them to delete my account data with my actual phone number and have instead set up twitch 2FA with my Google voice number. I'm not saying they're untrustworthy, I'd have just preferred to be able to make that decision before relying on them to actually be such.įor many people, the convenience of having them store and sync 2FA secrets is worthwhile and warrants using them as their 2FA app of choice. Which is the reason why I'm upset I wasn't told they'd be getting any of my data until after they already had it. Supposedly securely, but I generally don't trust online claims of security, seen too many reputable companies get hacked or leak sensitive data like sieves. It consists of an app for mobile and desktop, and a service which stores and syncs your 2FA logins so they're available on multiple devices.

I say unfortunately, because while this is no doubt convenient for Twitch to just do a straight drop-in of Authy's service: this also limits users' options, since they don't support showing a QR code that could be scanned to setup TRUE 2FA in a third party app (SMS-Based Two Factor is not truly 2FA, and may be vulnerable to phone number theft), Or, for example U2F/FIDO based two factor would be more secure than any of these options, or many people would prefer to use other OATH HOTP or TOTP type tokens and have existing apps that use the same standard, such as the Microsoft or Google authenticator: more importantly, some users might want to be able to make an Offline "Just in case" backup of their two-factor key which the Authy app does not support.Īuthy is a two factor authentication service.

I believe the process is the same or similar for ANY website that uses Authy: you enter your phone number for the first time, and if its new, then an Authy account will be created for the new phone number, and until you install the app - Authy's 2FA is SMS based.
